Medicinal hair loss pills, based on one of the three substances - finasteride, dutasteride or spironolactone, are the most powerful hair loss treatments available today. They belong to the category of anti-androgens which suppress the androgen activity in the body and thus protect hair follicles from the harmful effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This metabolite of the male hormone testosterone causes miniaturization of hair follicles in both, male and female hair loss patients, leading to male and female pattern baldness (MPB and FPB). MPB and FPB are hereditary forms of hair loss. Only the aforementioned three anti-androgen medications are currently used to treat this form of hair loss. Finasteride and dutasteride are drugs that can only be prescribed to male patients and they work by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into DHT. Spironolactone is a medication prescribed to female hair loss sufferers and it also works by inhibiting the conversion into DHT as well as by blocking its activity at androgen receptors in hair follicles.
When to Take Finasteride, Dutasteride or Spironolactone
Finasteride, dutasteride and spironolactone should not be used to treat other forms of hair loss than androgenetic alopecia also known as male or female pattern baldness. Androgenetic alopecia is a hereditary form of hair loss and it happens through shrinking of susceptible hair follicles. The male form of androgenic alopecia affects the top of the scalp and the frontal area whereas the female form is often a diffuse hair loss, affecting the whole scalp and, therefore, more difficult to recognize in its initial stage. If you are not sure whether you are suffering from male or female pattern baldness you need to see a doctor who will perform a hair miniaturization test and determine the best course of action. Finasteride, dutasteride and spironolactone should not be used to treat alopecia areata or temporary forms of hair loss such as telogen or anagen effluvium or seasonal hair loss.
Reasons to Buy Hair Loss Pills
Hair loss patients can buy finasteride either in the form of generic Propecia or generic Proscar. Both of these drugs contain finasteride in the same delivery form and the only difference is its dosage - 1mg in generic Propecia versus 5mg in generic Proscar. Although Proscar is indicated for the treatment of BPH, you can buy its larger 5mg pills and save money by cutting them in smaller pieces containing just 1mg of finasteride needed to treat baldness. Comparing dutasteride and finasteride for treating benign prostatic enlargement
This recent study conducted by two universities (Queen's University Kingston Ontario Canada and Tampere Finland), Tauranga Hospital in New Zealand and by GlaxoSmithKline was conducted on men over 50 years of age with symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, receiving dutasteride 0.5mg or finasteride 5mg once daily. After a four-week placebo run-in period, patients were randomized to receive dutasteride or finasteride for 48 weeks. The study concluded that oral dutasteride 0.5mg and finasteride 5mg daily, when administered for twelve months, were similarly effective in reducing prostate volume and improving urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. A similar percentage of adverse events was experienced by patients of both treatment groups (dutasteride and finasteride).
Treatment of female androgenic alopecia with dutasteride
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a natural substance responsible for causing androgenic alopecia. Finasteride, which reduces conversion of testosterone in DHT, decreasing its activity, is approved for the treatment of male pattern baldness. This study from the Warsaw Medical School in Poland is based on the case of a 46-year-old woman with pattern hair loss who was non-responsive to minoxidil but who initially benefited from the use of finasteride. Due to only limited longer-term improvement from finasteride and persisting mental distress resulting from hair loss, another 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, dutasteride, was introduced. After six months of the treatment significant improvement was observed and after nine months the clinical diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia could no longer be established in this patient while no side effects were observed.
